Specialty Recycling

Specialty Recycling

In addition to the basics, Tufts recycles some other specialty items. Find collection areas near you on the Tufts Eco-Map.

  • Batteries (9 volt and under): You can deposit alkaline and some other common batteries in the many battery buckets located across campus. You must tape both the ends of all batteries with clear tape – they are a fire hazard during transportation. There is clear tape attached to all battery collection buckets. Untaped batteries cannot be accepted. Unlike in previous years, you will not be able to put light bulbs, inkjet cartridges or electronic waste into these buckets.

  • Lithium Ion Batteries (AA, C, 9 volt and button; mainly used in computers and cameras): Lithium is reactive with water and can cause serious fires. These must be collected separately. Please tape the ends and place them in the specially designated buckets.
  • Electronic waste (small devices or items with an electrical cord): There are three drop-off locations for E-waste:
    • Collaborative Learning and Innovation Complex (574 Boston Ave) – 4th Floor
    • Facilities Services building (520 Boston Ave)
    • Mayer Campus Center – 1st Floor
  • Sneakers: Sneaker recycling is available under the stairs at the Tisch Fitness Center.
  • Compost: fruit and vegetable scraps can be put in the small yellow organics toters stationed around campus located on the Tufts Eco Map or in the bin in your dorm managed by your Eco-Rep.
